Generator Guide
A practical guide to help you understand and select the right diesel generator for your application.
How to choose generator capacity
Start with your total running load in kVA or kW, then add a safety margin and account for starting loads (motors, pumps, HVAC). Future expansion should also be considered when sizing.
Standby vs Prime vs Continuous power
Standby is for emergency back-up during utility outages. Prime is for continuous use as the main supply with variable load. Continuous power is rated for constant load operation 24/7.
50Hz vs 60Hz
Frequency depends on the regional grid and the connected equipment. IPS supplies both 50Hz and 60Hz configurations across the model range.
Canopy Type vs Open Type
Canopy (enclosed) units include sound attenuation and weather protection for outdoor installation. Open units are intended for indoor or containerized installations with separate enclosures.
Voltage selection
Match alternator voltage to the site's electrical system (e.g. 400/230 V at 50Hz, 480/277 V at 60Hz). Confirm with your electrical engineer before ordering.
Engine brand considerations
IPS integrates Cummins, Mitsubishi, Perkins, Volvo, Baudouin, Hyundai, John Deere, FPT, and Yanmar engines. Selection depends on power range, after-sales support, and project specification.
When to request a technical review
Request a technical review for critical applications, multi-genset paralleling, complex load profiles, or when project specifications require engineering sign-off.
